2019 Year end report

kodiak halibut fishing

Looking back to the start of the season, and the season overall, it was another great year. Sure, I could mention the repower of the Fishy Fishy, that was to be no more than 10 days, that took over 100! But that’s another story for when you get here. Now that it is complete, we are extremely pleased with their performance. Area 3B is now in range, where you can catch 2 halibut every day, with no annual limit, weather and daylight permitting.

King salmon showed up this season and they were pretty good-sized ones, high 40s was normal and the occasional “close” to 50 was there. It was a great king season. This summer hot and dry, very unusual, but there was plenty of ling cod, rockfish and halibut. Silvers were plentiful and fun as usual. We haven’t had a “real“ winter since 2011, so our Sitka blacktail deer population is very healthy with super bucks taken this year. Puddle ducks are here in full swing, pintails, gadwall, widgon, green wing teal, mallards, barrows goldeneye, greater scuap, plus sea ducks like surf scoters, long tails, white wings, and harlequin are plentiful. Emperors have been low in numbers, but are around, I have not seen any eiders – kings or Stellers.

Kodiak Combos is a pro-staffer for Gotam Baits Transformer Series. Starting in 2018, we helped them develop and refine their current design. It is extremely effective for catching big halibut, big yelloweye and big black rockfish.

If you are a subscriber to Fish Alaska Magazine, you know our daughter Zoe and her BFF made the cover this December holding a king crab. There’s also a great write-up in the magazine of a trip this last summer. If you would like, I can mail you a copy – just call or email with your address. Thanks everyone for your business and I wish you all a safe and prosperous new year.
