2018 Year in Review

2018 was a very busy year for Kodiak Combos and the Old Harbor Lodge thanks to all our friends and clients who booked fishing and hunting adventures with Lianna and I. We started off the season with king salmon trollers in May with great success, it was a relief to see the king salmon return after 2017 low numbers. We switched over from scotty down riggers to the Cannon digi troll 10s, after we mounted a Cannon on one side of the boat and trolled the Scotty and Cannon side by side. It was clear that the Cannon with its jig function and positive ion control out fished the Scotty. Another change was going to a top secret artificial lure that out fished herring. Bottom fishing was successful as well, mainly from traveling far and fishing hard with scents and the bigger and new Gotem baits that we field tested. Fall fishing silvers in the salt and river was a big hit, we trolled and jigged silvers in the salt and then jetted up river for some fly fishing the next day, that was a blast!

Deer season was fully booked, we have not had a real winter since 2011 so our deer population is very healthy producing some nice trophies this year, again! The added twist? Bears! Hungry bears! With the low amount of pink salmon for the bears to eat, they were after our hunters deer, it made for some very exciting hunts to say the least. We closed the season down with a pair of meat hunters that tagged out just before the new year.

Zoe is in 2nd grade and doing very well. She enjoys helping me vacuum pack the fish at the end of the day. My Dad is 76 and very active still helping maintain both the lodge and boats. Loren and Garett are still in Kodiak city commercial fishing but come home to help put deer and fish away. Maxi, our 3 legged lab, is still running like she has 6 legs!

We look forward to providing more adventures in 2019, please call or email us soon as we are already booking up. With this great success we decided not to do our Minneapolis and California shows. We will however still do the Great Alaska Sportsmen’s show in Anchorage. If you have not done so please join us on Facebook as well a couple of fishing and hunting forums we participate in. Happy New Year!
