2011 Season Report
2011 was a WOW! Year for us. First my wife Lianna gave birth to our Daughter Zoe on my birthday, WOW! Weather allowed all those that booked a fishing or hunting trip to arrive and leave without too much excitement, WOW! We did have some stormy weather while fishing and hunting but we had a bigger new boat, WOW! Yes Lianna and I got financing through Wells Fargo for a 34-foot fiberglass boat that is truly a sportfisher with all the amenities of a yacht! Flushing toilet, WOW! Hot water at the bait station on deck, WOW!

2010's top king salmon were in the 70lb range, 2011's were in the mid- to low-60 lb range, WOW!! We didn’t even weigh some of those 60's thinking we need a 70 lb plus to get onboard, WOW! One guy booked a king trip mid-May (before the derby) and landed a 68lber, WOW! Max, a German Wirehair Pointer pup was shipped all the way from Castle Rock, WA. Wow! He loves to fish, I hope he can hunt when he grows up.

Sitka Blacktail deer hunters have taken the biggest bucks I have ever seen, WOW! This is the first full season we have our own lodge to accommodate our guests, WOW! It has been a super year for us and hope it was for you, too. Thanks for those who rebooked and we look forward to seeing you in 2012. We are taking bookings now for limited space in 2012, please visit us at the Great Alaska Sportsmans show in Anchorage, AK in April or visit our website for more news. Thanks again for a Wow! Year. WOW!

2010 Season Report

2010 was a very busy year, kings were bigger than in years past, ling cod and halibut were plentiful, massive racks were taken during the Sitka blacktail deer season and those who pursed mountain goats were able to take them if they wanted, plus we opened “The Old Harbor Lodge”!

Fishing Report
Trolling for king salmon early in the season yields giant kings, but the temps can be in the 30s and wind in the 40 knot range, then you add in 12 foot seas to mix, you can be miserable or you can have the best gear made! We added new green Grundens raingear tops and bottoms to our Grundens orange gear. We added more padding to the deck chairs and more heat to the cabin of the boat. Here Jeff's 67 lb'er and a couple of guys who were glad to have the gear to match the king trolling weather!

2 of our anglers placed in the money categories of the Island wide king salmon derby, netting them $5000 and $2500.

Old Harbor Native Corp hosted some key business during the king salmon derby including Mikunda, Cottrell & Co., Wells Fargo, First National Bank of Alaska and U.S. Travel; here is First National Bank's Kodiak Branch manager landing his biggest king. Later in the year, Red battles the biggest fish he has ever felt, his friend Teddy returns to Kodiak Combos for his 3rd trip and hold up his first quill back rockfish, a Japanese TV personality Ayako bring a TV crew. Ed's second trip here netted him sunny weather and lings!

Couples were the large part of our fishing guests this season. Tony and Nancy caught some nice kings, as did Bob and Deb. Redd and Garnet fished with Roy and Jolene, targeting silvers while Roy stares into a monster ling. Don and Dee traveled here with Tony and Nancy, and filled their boxes with halibut, salmon, cod and rockfish.

Hunting Report
The deer taken had some nice racks. Bill's party took some nice bucks in October, deer were showing signs of rutting by beating up the trees! Eric's team was made up active duty military they did well hunting the hills and beach with success. Mark and Martin arrived with a recurve bow and pistols to hunt deer and they were able to stalk up to a buck, or should I say, a buck stumbled upon them. Keith returned for his second deer trip and we paired him up with Larry, who was also on his second deer trip, Keith landed king salmon and took a doe home while Larry took some nice bucks. Knights Taxidermy is mounting one of Larry's bucks and Clark Air showed up to purse goats and deer and they scored! Tundra Bob took several bucks and is having one mounted! Jack also took a nice buck and is having that mounted also, hopefully when it is done, you can see it at the Kodiak Best Western.

Goat hunters were successful, some took shots and were able to retrieve their trophy, while some passed on the shot and waited for a better day.

The Old Harbor Lodge
We opened “The Old Harbor Lodge” in November, the place can accommodate 6 guests now and will accommodate 9 this spring. The place has tiled bathrooms and showers, laminate wood flooring, patio door and big windows overlooking the bay. Guests loved the heat and fire from the wood stove with a glass door, while some liked the Dish network on the 47 inch flat screen TV. We would like to thank our friends and family who helped to make this goal a reality, especially brothers Jack and Scotty, and Uncle Mike.

January Duck Hunting
Brad booked another seaduck adventure with Kodiak Combos, in previous years he harvested, black, white wing and surf scoters, long tails, harlequin, barrows goldeneyes, and a king eider, this last trip he wanted pacific eider and greater scaup. He took greater scaup from the UFO layout we deployed. On his last part of the Kodiak Combo we deployed the UFO layout for Pacifics and Brad scored! We are now taking bookings for the short eider season (January 2011).

2009 Season Report
2009 started with Tony and his 63.2 pound derby fish! The A team Tony, Krill and Cottonwood headed out despite the forecast of NE40! Later in the morning, after landing several 30s and 40s, Tony was up and battled the 3rd place fish for 45 minutes.

Roy and Jolene returned to fill the freezer with chicken halibut, king salmon and yelloweye. Jolene hooked into something too big for her to handle, so Roy pulled in a monster halibut that they decided to let live and lay more eggs, estimated to 150#s

Kids
In 2009, we had record number of families fishing together, the youngest was Caleb with his dad Ted who landed kings and halibut, then Ed and his grandson Cory landed some very nice ling cod. Jack and his 2 boys landed halibut and rockfish, Tim shot his first Sitka blacktail buck and landed his first king salmon with family friend William. Kim and 2 kids took nice king salmon and halibut trolling!

Kodiak Island King Salmon Derby Results
Despite the poor king returns reported for some streams in Alaska, trolling in the salt was productive. The third annual Island wide derby was another sweep by the Old Harbor fleet. Of the 9 “money fish” we took 7 (we usually don’t turn in kings under 50). Conrad's client took a 66 pounder, CJ's client took a 65, and angler Tony Beatty took 3rd with a 63 pounder from my boat. Tony is having a mold made by Real Life Taxidermy.

January is the Time for Eiders!
2009 is shaping up to be a great year! We had a very successful trip to San Mateo at the ISE Trade Show. A huge shout out and thank you to Tony Beatty, NAI BT Commercial, for his hospitality during the show. Tony shared his home with us and made us feel like we were at home.

Immediately after, we traveled back to Old Harbor and met up with Charles Southworth.

Duck season opens in October, and the hunting is outstanding. But January is the time for eiders. In 2007, Chris Angeletti collected a beautiful Drake king eider, and in 2008, Brad Watts added a king eider plus a number of other ducks to his collection. This year was right in line, and Charles Southworth got a beautiful Drake king eider! Congratulations Charles!

2008 Season Report
The 2008 fishing season is wrapped up and over all it was another successful year. Amanda from Kodiak Area Native Association Dental Team landed an 82 -inch halibut (too big for the scale!), the biggest since Stuart's 97-inch halibut in 1999. Eric landed a 62-pound king which was the biggest for my boat this year, in April! Silvers were schooled up in the deep and it was fun to stay on top of them; once over them we had doubles every time. Some of you returned with rockfish on the “list” of fish to take home, so that was a treat to fill boxes with rockfish and lingcod.

Tundra Bob and crew, Carl and Red Beard, came to Kodiak Combos for mountain goats and Sitka blacktail deer. Both the goat tags were filled, Red Beard, Carl and Tundra Bob were dropped off at about 9 AM and they called me at noon, saying they were back on the beach! The biggest billy rough scored 36 1/8”. The next day, 3 Sitka blacktails were taken, all making book. The biggest scored 98”. Tundra Bob also took a nice cross fox and Red Beard got his goose!

The Volvo D4 diesel engine we put in this last winter (February) now has over 700 hours and works like a dream!

Kodiak Combos Kicks Off the 2nd Annual Tournament
Kodiak Combos kicked off the 2nd annual tournament by turning in the first top 3 fish with clients Greg Razo, Marvin Adams, and Dave Goade of Anchorage. Of the first 3 days fishing, we were the only boat to deliver fish out of 5 other boats. Dave Goade finally landed a fish and it was the biggest at 47.5 pounds. He had hooked into 4 the day before and received the nickname for LDR, for Long Distance Release! You can't win unless you land 'em!
